Charles Condomine, a successful novelist, invites the medium Madame Arcati to his house so he can learn more about the occult for a novel he is writing. Unfortunately, Madame Arcati summons the ghost of Charles’ first wife Elvira without realising she did so. Elvira plots to get Charles to join her in the afterlife, but the plan goes awry and instead of Charles himself, his second wife Rachel dies and haunts Elvira. When Charles summons Madame Arcati back, she realises that the maid Edith is psychic and had been a conductor. She manages to dematerialise the ghosts of Charles’ wives but counsels him to leave the house as soon as possible as the ghosts might still be around unseen.
