2014 – “The Taming of the Shrew” by William Shakespeare
Posted on: May 7, 2014 Old Baptista Minola has two daughters: Katharina and Bianca. Katharina, the elder of the two, is a rough, loud, and temperamental shrew whilst the younger sister, Bianca, is pretty, sweet, and well-mannered. But Baptista wants to see Katharina married first before he gives his younger daughter away. This poses a problem, because while Bianca is no short of suitors, Katharina scares away every possible husband.
Hortensio and Gremio, two of Bianca’s suitors make a pact to find a suitable husband for Katharina and free Bianca, just as the rich Lucentio arrives in town and immediately falls for Bianca. Disguised as her tutor he enters the Minola household and courts her. Meanwhile Petruchio, a rich landowner from Verona, has just arrived in town and is looking for a suitable wife. Seeing a challenge he agrees to marry Katharina.
After a hasty and tumultuous wedding Katharina is carried off to his house where he attempts to tame her by giving her a taste of her own medicine. Back in Padua Bianca has fallen in love with her tutor Cambio, the disguised Lucentio. Bianca and Lucentio marry secretly and all things become unraveled in the final banquet scene with the newly “tamed” Katharina. But has she really been tamed?
